I have a 2000 Ford Excursion and have ran all new wiring and speakers. Was planing on leaving the head unit/cd changer in place and do a pick up with a scosche kit. Is there any problems with leaving the head unit unwired to speakers? Every time I turn up the volume the Bass ( Memphis 1000d and 2- 12" memphis hp's) fades in and out and the frequency seems wrong. Tried audiobahn eq6 and electronic cross over, neither work out the problems. If there is no solution and I need to replace the head unit, is there a unit that is compatable to the CD changer.  Thanks for your help.    Stiver                  2000 Excursion Limited  Powerstroke 4x4. What's running your speaker's now ? You mentioned that you left the HU unwired ? Where did you get the RCA input signal from for the Memphis amp ?

I'm using a scosche line out converter going to audiobahn eq6 then to the 2 crossfire amps on the audiobahn 5x7's.  eq6 sub out to the memphis 1000d for the 2- 12" hp's.   no speakers are actually hooked directly to the fac. head unit.   Stiver                                               2000 Excursion Limited  Powerstroke 4x4. Does your model Excursion have the OEM amp ? If so, where did you grab the wires for the LOC from ? Before or after the amplifier ?

They are tapped at the HU before the amp now. I also tried using just an electronic x-over on the subs tapped before the rear speakers.  I'm not really sure if this vehicle has an OEM amp. I can't seem to find a wiring diagram for a 2000 limited excursion.  thanks, Stiver                                                                             2000 Excursion Limited  Powerstroke 4x4. How many plugs were on the back of the OEM HU ? If there is only one, then you DO NOT have an amplifier. If you have more than one plug, then you have an amplifier. What do you have the LOC gain set at ?

I tried adjusting the gain on the the LOC, EQ, and the amp's. I've checked the wiring  polarity. I've been building custom stereos since 1988 in my vehicle and for friends. This is the first one I've had this much trouble with. Oh, also the bass comes and goes. Could it be possible that I'm not sending enough current ?   Stiver

if you are running that much equipmemnt I would just give in and get a new head unit the power from true rca's will improve the sound overall and should fix your problem and I think you will be much happier

Doubtful. This is probably the last year of the changer with the MP3 rage going on. I too would replace the factory head with a aftermarket cd player. If you really want the changer, get one while you still can. There was a question asked above that either I missed or was not answered. This was how many plugs on the back of the factory radio? If there are two plugs then chances are you have tied into the wrong wires on the back of the factory head to drive the LOC.
Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.
