book says brown at coil,it has seperate coils on top and no brown wire.how can i test for the coil,what setting on the meter can i use?

The tach can be obtained from the PCM under the drivers dash, it is Green / Orange.
It can also be obtained / found at the data link connector in the left rear corner of the engine compartment.
