Need design help w/ 6x9s in my hatch

Understood. If you want to use your 6x9's I'd dynamat the deck, run them free air, and leave it at that.

I understand you dont want to spend more money on an 14 year old car but keep in mind what ever you install in it can be easily removed and re-installed in the next car. Ive got a Head unit and EQ I know have been in at least 5 cars I can remember.

That basslink is good for some mild bass to a factory system.  I would get the 6x9 and put them in.  Go to www.crutchfield.com and look at the basslink there.  Also look into some bazooka tubes, JBL makes a smaller bass box, and so does Kenwood.  Not sure how they all sound but I've read som reviews on them and they say that they aren't bad...for the price and space.  Another place to look is http://www.cardomain.com/shop  They carry a good selection of stuff too.  And never foget ebay.

P.S.- All of the previously mentioned subs can come preamplified and are easily removable for another vehicle.
