My siter just got a mercedes with the star wars like key, and is begging for a remote start. I will need some help from you guys. Has anyone on this site done one yet? I do no know exact model, but its an 04. My only questions relate to bypassing the key for remote start. Any help would be appreciated. I know it will not be easy, but nothing fun ever is right?

Ummm... I wouldn't do it. Funny thing about Mercedes (at least Mercedes Canada). They Consider the vehicle "theirs" as long as it's under warranty. What does this mean? Well, say you go in for a CEL. Before they will fix it, they will want the car as it is from the factory, so that means no remote starters, aftermarket radio, etc. Not a biggie, right? Unplug it, becomes wire to wire essentially, right? Not good enough. They want completely unmolested wiring harnesses as well. So, they will change the harnesses affected, at your expense, and then fix the car. Kinda neat, eh? I won't touch a 1999 or newer Mercedes with a ten foot pole.

In the U.S. there is some protection from dealerships that don't honor thier warranties. Please see below or google the Magnuson-Moss warranty act for more info. Also I have had personal experience where a dealership tried to blame a problem on a remote starter I had professionally installed. They did in fact charge me for the time they spent diagnosing a problem. However when I later found that a shift cable retainer had been dropped during assembly of the truck and wedged itself between the BCM causing the problem they (dealership) was happy to refund the charges after they identified the retainer I had brought them.

Below is an excerpt from one of many references to the Magnuson-Moss act.

"Legally, a vehicle manufacturer cannot void the warranty on a vehicle due to an aftermarket part unless they can prove that the aftermarket part caused or contributed to the failure in the vehicle (per the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. 2302(C)) . For best results, consider working with performance-oriented dealerships with a proven history of working with customers. If your vehicle manufacturer fails to honor emission/warranty claims, contact EPA at (202) 260-2080 or www.epa.gov. If federal warranty protection is denied, contact the FTC at (202) 326-3128 or www.ftc.gov. For additional information, check out the following links:

Thanks for the info. I am familiar with the lagal aspects. I give all of my personal customers a copy for their glovebox. Thank you again though. Any one know how to get around that key. I heard there is a guy in michigan (I lve in michigan) that does them, but cannot find him nor do I want to pay 1800 dollars for the install. More importantly my sister can really nag.

Don't bother, there currently is no bypass available for said vehicle with smart key. If she wants remote start tell her to buy a chevy, hehehe.

Chevy... Can do them in my sleep. To be honest she isn't beggin, I just really want the challenge. Maybe some fiber optic cable and a whole crap load of relays? Any help is appreciated

theres a guy around here that did one with a laser key all i know is he is a tech a t the dealer ive seen it work so i know hes not BSin but i think he used a seprete key cylinder and key under the dash some where he doesnt really tell anyone how he did it all he said is it costed him like 1500$ in parts to get it to work but i dunno

Leave it to a company like Mercedes to completely ignore a segment of the multi billion dollar auto accessory market.

Hi Jimbo.... I'm the guy in MI that can do the Mercedes w/ the Laser key. No extra Mercedes parts are needed but you have to have extensive knowlege of microcontrollers and how to program them. If you want give me a call 888 909 9473....
