I'm trying to install a remote starter in my '98 S-10 (With a manual transmission...if that affects things).  I need to run my tach wire, but was wondering if I could avoid going through the firewall.  Can I use a wire at the gauge cluster-It has a tachometer, so it must be receiving the signal somehow...does anyone know the color of this wire and if it would serve the same purpose? Thanks!

Short answer is yes in that it does function in the same way. I think the question becomes a matter of signal strength , so it will work on some cars and not on others and with some alarms and not others. It is not a DC voltage signal but a type of waveform and can't be measured with a voltmeter.(you might get voltage but it doesn’t have the same meaning). You would have to post your car type for wire information.

My advice.............save yourself the effort of removing the gauge cluster and go straight to the coil.

White wire with a Black stripe on the coil.

Hope this helps,

Thanks everyone.  Bobk, I found a wire that sends an AC signal that ranges between 6.80 and 7.00.  However, the signal does not seem to vary in relation to the RPM.  Is this okay?

Also--is this wire accurate or would I be better to go directly to the coil?
