Yup, the whole thing has to be removed to access the 4 screws holding the deck in place. Here's how it's done: http://carstereohelp.com/stereoremovalChevyCavalier2.htm

about the wireing on this car. i was going to buy a cd deck before and the guy at the store told me that the factory deck cant be removed because its wired in to other components on the car. is this true? do you see any problems attatching the cd changer to the factory wiring? my changer has three wires. one is ground, one is acc, and the other is memory. its a pioneer cd changer. i took apart the dash yesterday, fairly easy, but the store i bought from forgot to mention that i need an adaptor for the fm modulator to work......

no the factory radio can be removed. the guy at the store is an idiot. changer will be pretty easy to install. get the wire colors you need of the data base on this web site. the antenna adapters are gm-10 and gm-20 atleast thats what it  is with metra.

Hold on a second before you go cutting into any wires.  2000 and up Cavaliers do not have an accessory wire going to the radio. They have a databus wire, which is wired into other components like the guy at the store said. This databus wire tells the factory radio when to switch on.  You will need the Metra 40GM10, and 40GM20 antenna adaptors.  The constant power can be tapped from the factory deck or any other constand power source. For accessory power in these I usually tap into the BCM switched fuse on the left side of the dash.

You don't need to remove the radio to do a changer.

Get yourself a Pioneer or a Sony, because the power, antenna, and controller cables are all run separately.  Peel back the carpeting on the right side of the trunk, and you'll see that the cable can simply be unplugged from the underside of the antenna.  I'm pretty sure you don't need any antenna adapters back there either, but you'll have a tough time sliding the Sony/Pioneer modulator box directly onto the factory antenna, so buy yourself an ordinary 12" antenna extension---you'll see what I mean when you go to do it.

For constant and switched power, just find it anywhere you can.  Like Chriswallace says, the fuse box is a sure bet.  Also, there's a thick bundle under the left dash leading out to the hood, and thickest wires in that bundle are the main ignition-switch wires--- red is constant, brown is accesssory.

the cd changer is a pioneer, ill take alook at that anteena. any idea which wire is the datbus wire if i decide to go thru the factory deck? also, can i use the power from lets say the licence plate light. the reason i ask is i may install it in the trunk and it seems like a lot of work to rewire all the way to the front. i know i need a constant power source, so installing it in the glove box may be my best bet. the wires are very long and should reach the back.. ,
