Hey guys,

I want to buy a new amp for Infiinity Perfect 12.1 sub (single 4 ohm voice coil, 350W RMS, 96db sensitivity). This is going into a sealed cubic foot box in a Ford Explorer. I have two options that I have narrowed it down to.

a. I can get an MTX Thunder 421D, which will put out 210W RMS at 4 ohms (420W at 2 ohms but the sub won't support that) from sounddomain for $176 shipped.

or,

b. I can get a phoenix gold xenon 400.1, which will put out 400W RMS at 1-4ohms for $200 shipped from Ebay.

I want to purchase the amp tonight or tomorrow morning so I can get it shipped out tomorrow. I know my sub shouldn't need that much power to get it thumping with 96db sensitivity, and I like MTX amp quality and sound, but the Phoenix Gold is also a good amp that puts out almost twice the power for $14 bucks more. One amp is from a factory authorized retailer (MTX) and the other is from Ebay with a one year warranty (PG).

Taking all considerations into account, which would you guys go with? I would especially like to hear from anyone who has a Perfect running on lower power levels to get some input on sound quality and thump at around 200 watts or so, but all opinions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

I have a Kappa Perfect 12.1d that I ran on a X400.1 for a while, then I switched to a PPI PCX-1250, then I switched back to a X600.1
What can I say, I like some PG. But if you do decide to go with the Xenon, PLEEEEEEEEEASSSSE buy from an authorised dealer. You never know when you'll need a warrenty repair done.

I am not sure what your budget is but, I would look into this amp,

The 12.1 is rated at 350w RMS and the 801D outs out 400w @4ohms.

if you are only going with one svc sub, you should just buy a two channel and bridge it.   more economical, and it makes more sense than wasting a monoblock amp running at half its potential at 4 ohms.
are you sure that that xenon amp puts out 400 at 4ohms? its not very clear, even in their pdf manual. it just says 400w at 4 to 1 ohm.... so is that saying that no matter what the impedance, it puts out 400? thats interesting if so... usually the rating is based off the lowest stable impedance when they do the marketing stuff... anyways, im skeptical about that xenon amp putting out 400 wrms at 4ohm, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

Yes, that PG amp puts out 400 Watts RMS at anything between 1-4 ohms. I thought that strange also, but supposedly they have circuitry built in that optimizes output at 400 watts regardless of the impedance load on the amp.

Because of budget constraints and wanting an MTX amp, I went ahead and got an MTX 421D amp. It only puts out 210 Watts at 4 ohms, but I may just sell the SVC sub and get me a DVC sub so I can maximize the amp's power (over 400 watts RMS at 2 ohms). I think that amp will be a good amp for future expandability and it only cost me 160 bucks from sounddomain. Can't beat that.
