ive heard the same phenominon in my friends car.  at low volumes the sub has a staticky hiss/hum

I've seen this before, but it was the amp that squealed.  Wiggle the ground wire and see if you get a change.  The amp could have a bad internal ground- intermittent solder connection that would cause this.

When your cap smoked, was it charged?  Caps do go bad and tend to send voltage back to your battery which will cause the battery to overcharge and eventually burn out.
