Down firing a sub in home applications is the best bet as far as I have experienced. I have 2 12" Boston Acoustics 200 watt powered subs for my home system an they are both down firing.

You need to find out first if the woofer that you are using is capable of running verticle. Here is a link to a calclator that will help you figure this out.

Input the required data and it will tell you if it can be used in that manner.

If you haven't built the enclosure yet for that sub build it large, as you will need to increase efficiency as much as possible.  Port it if that's possible.  And check your amplifier specs to find if it will handle a 4 ohm load.  Coupling with a corner of the room should provide the most bass response.
Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Hey no problem. Happy to help. And Stevdart was right, I forgot to mention to put it in a corner of the room.
