hello there.

i'm installing some actuators and were installed according to this diagram. when i connect the 87a to ground both relays short. please help and clarify what is going on. thank you.

I'm no relay pro, but at first glance it looks like they're not symmetrical. On the rt side, try making 86 your neg output & 85 the batt+, or vice versa on the left side.

Are you absolutely sure you are using SPDT relays as opposed to SPST? The middle pin would be labeled 87A for SPDT and 87 or 87B for SPST.

i checked the relays and both are 87a....... now one of them is really old but kept in good storage.... the other i just purchased in one auto parts store.... i checked each one individually... then disconnected all other prongs, just connecting the 87 to 12v 87a ground and they short. i can tell they are shorting coz everytime i run ground the dome lights dim badly..... please add your input. thanks.

The problem is that 87 and 87A cannot connect to each other, it is not possible unless the relay is really badly blown. Do you have a meter with continuity? Also, try disconnecting 30 and see if it still happens. Does the relay get warm/hot?

Just as a background question, have you ever installed actuators before? What type of actuators do you have 5 wire or 2? Hopefully you have 2 wire. If 2 wire, are both wires coming off of the actuator going directly to the relays and not getting pinched or shorted anywhere?

.... i installed as the diagram states.... then i unplugged all other prongs leaving the 87 12v and when i grounded 87a this happened.... the dome lights that were on dimmed... like if it was drawing alot of current from the battery.... and as you aked if they get any warm.... the wires get hot....

they are 2 wire actuators...and i was sort of bench testing the actuators... i havent run the lines yet for them.... all what i was doing was testin before get the install further.

i've installed actuators before but its been awhile... i haven't installed an alarm for about 4 years... i even forgot what direction a diode works (shame)

ok guys... today i received some relays i bought from parts express....... and i tried this again and it WORKED FINE....

the original relay i was using i bought at an auto parts store.... here's what i compared on the AUTO PARTS relay against the PArts Express.....

the auto parts relay

\ 87a._____.87

86 \

[] --------------- \ 30

so with this freaking relay the 87a and 87 are together while the 30 rests away from 87a.......

now the parts xpress relay shows the same diagram we have in this page's relay "how to" section.

I had the same exact problem?? but i used two brand new relays from a big chain store... they looked cheap though.. i dontk now why but they shorted ..

so you got another set of relays and it worked? any specific brand?

cause i wasted like 5 hours trying to figure this out this weekned and after that i was soo frusturated and gave up

You guy s neeed to stop buying cheap relays and buy proper brands such as bosch relay for actuators shorting -- posted image.

you can go to partsexpress and buy the relays they have.
