whats everyone doing with the new door lock styles where they use braided wire instead of rods. How do you install actuators? We did one attaching to the wire but it has come back twice not worth the hassle. They have them on the new chev colorado corrollas . Any suggestions?

Can you connect directly to the latch itself?

no they use a cable with a plastic cover. We tried drilling a hole through the handle but the space is too small to put a connector for the rod and small wire. I talked to another dealer and he said the only way is to buy the factory actuators that are actually in the latch. He said it isnt as expensive as you would think. my clientele is too cheap to spend that type of cash.

The colorado has a small plastic loop at the bottom of the latch (actual latch where the door closes) that you can use for the rod. Bend it through the loop and it will stay put.

Quote from another forum:

Just thought I would share this one with you since I have seen three of these so far.. The new (05) hondas are using cables much like the hood release or throttle cables on their door locks instead of the old 'bars'. I spent over 2 hours trying to figure out if I could install actuators on this type of system. I finally figured out a way that is pretty fast and easy, and I thought I would share it with the fellow installers.
All I had to do was hammer out a flat spot in the rod that comes with the actuator and drill and tap a hole through both the rod and the brass transition piece where the cable meets the plastic lock knob. a small screw holds it in place just fine. You will have to cut out part of the front of the plastic jacket that holds this brass piece in order to attach the push rod to it. For a little extra I added a touch of JB weld to the threads.
For some reason there are alot of new hondas on the market and the streets with out keyless entry or power door locks this year.

I would not waste my time trying to rig an actuator. They will all fail sooner than later. I go and purchase the factory locks and they come complete as an assy. They are very inexspensive and they won't come back.

How much are you talking about when you say "inexpensive" ? Is inexpensive under 20 bucks, 50 bucks, under 100? Because to me, most after market actuators are inexpensive, at less than 10 bucks.

i heard they are about $50 each . we charge keyless entry plus 2 actuators $249 . With buying these factory actuators would bring price up to may be $400 for a 2 door car.

For a 4 door power door lock kit I pay about $28. That includes all the wiring and central door lock module. That is cheap and they work great. But they were not designed for the new cable system. I do not like to try and rig them as the results have not been good for long term reliablility. For example, on a 05 Accord I pay about $22 per door for the factory latch assy that includes the actuator. Yeah, it's 4 times the price but the dealer has no problem with me charging more for it when they know it is not coming back for repair. We are talking about an extra $60 in cost and they are much easier to install and wire up. Saving money on the labor. It works out to my advantage if it takes less time to install. Now, I do buy wholesale, not the retail prices.
