ok this is the box and rubber gasket i was talking about, please feel free to say what you like i love the opinions.

BUT my problem is here....

this is the way the car came to me..

Miata install with pics, and problem -- posted image.

this would be the first stages, sorry no in between pics, but with such a small trunk this car needs all the space just for the 2  - 10"

next is the outer trim i made.......TIME CONSUMING, never again...lol

Miata install with pics, and problem -- posted image.

the trim snaps in and looks tight.......but

Miata install with pics, and problem -- posted image.

with the owner taking the car all the time and i found myself making this without the car 90% of the time, due to that i made a huge mistake........

i filled in right to the top with body filler, the box is now really smooth but at the top it is too thick to get the rubber trunk gasket over it and the steel lip.... so what do i do??

Miata install with pics, and problem -- posted image.

i cant grind away the body fill casue in some parts it is 1/4 inch away from edge.. like in photo below

I am confused as to why you can't just sand down the body filler.  I understand the 1/4 gap in some places, so you can't just uniformly sand all the way around.  But if you went slow and sanded little by little, I don't see why it wouldn't work.  I would lay the rubber surround around the opening and mark it with a pencil, and then sand it.  The other option would be to trim the ring to fit barely under the flange of the rubber gasket.  If you can think of another way to dsescribe so I can btter understand you and have an "ah ha" moment, I'd be happy to give it more thought.  Over all I think it looks really awesome.  The floating amp will be really cool.

Good Luck!

well part of the prob is that it has cured and moved in and even if i sand it to the glass in a few spots i will be still 1/4 - 3/8 away in some spots.... but i am thinking of adding some layers of glass to the back in the spots that have lifted and then i could sand..... ah ha.... i think i got it lol

Personally I would just re-fiberglass the section that needed the extension to meet with the edge of the trunk. It will take a little time and some more body filler, but in the end it will turn out looking great. Take some tin foil and wrap the edge that requires the extension and fill it with fiberglass. After it dries remove the cover and sand the necessary parts and body fill to smooth it out.

Hey Velocity are you saying about the tin foil to take and make like a trough type area, and then fill that with fiberglass for your shape. Thats an awesome idea. If thats what your saying, if its not i've got a new idea for fixing stuff.

Yes, this is what I do to make my projects fit tight up against panels & liner's.

Do you have the project in the car while you do it?
Also I have a quick question sorry to highjack. How do you keep your mold from moving and twisting once you stretch fleece over them?
when I did my trunk lid the mold came out great. Then I put fleece on it and fiberglassed it and it pulled the mold in about an inch all the way around. Even after I put dowel rods on the inside to hold it in place.

Yes, I have the project in the car otherwise you won't know how far you have to fiberglass and also you need to fill in the gap. To reduce flex in the frame, you have to do alot of bracing and use larger peices if possible to frame up the project. The larger the peices, the better you can fasten the frame to a solid base. Some installer's use more peices to frame up the project and I find that an important step is to ensure that you have ample layer's of fiberglass on the resined fleece before you remove it from the vehicle. This is because the fiberglass will contract when cooling and expand when curing. If you remove the mold before there is enough layers to keep the form, this is when you run into problems of expanded or contracted projects.

Yeah Jeff my number one, mistake I guess.  I didnt have the project on the trunk at all when I fleeced and glassed it. Oh well, you live, you learn.  So next time lots and lots of bracing. Keep in the car while glassing.  Maybe it will turn out better on my next one. I ended up fixing it, It just took forever. Oh and btw the jeff that foil idea is awesome. Definitely have to use that one.
