My husband has a 1999 CHEVY CAVALIER as a race car and after stripping it , the car will not stay running for more than 10- 15 seconds. we believe it has something to do with the passlock . any assistance or inputs that could help us is greatly appreactied, how can we fix it ?

Check to make sure the passlock wires are still hooked up. They will be running up the column with the ignition harness. The colors may vary from ORANGE / black, white and or black. These wires are about 22 awg, so you cannot mistake them.

First of all you need to diagnosis what the problem is. The best way to do this is through the use of a scan tool. You should start be clearing all trouble codes from the car and then try starting it. If the problem is with the Passlock I system, the security light will flash in the instrument cluster. The cluster is part of the system, so I hope it is still intact and working in the car.

Yes cluster is still in car and working. The security light does flash and car shuts down.

Have you changed the ignition cylinder, the original cluster or the engine control module/PCM? They are all part of the system. You can try relearning the correct value is this is all thats wrong. Try to start the car. It it fails to start, leave the key in the run or igntion on position for atleast 10 minutes. Once the 10 mins. are up the security light should stop flashing. Turn the ignition off and now try restarting the car. It may or may not work. You really need to use a scan tool to help diagnosis the problem, otherwise you are just guessing.

The trouble codes may have to be cleared with a scan tool before the relearn procedure will work. If you have the original cluster for the car you should use it.
