no the protection light comes on when i plug in rca's and off when i take them out. now whats up?

Now its time to run a set of rca's temporarily from the deck to the amp, you can just pull the deck and throw them over the seats for all it matters here, just hook them up from the deck to the amp and see if the amp goes into preotection. I would have the amp checked , it sounds like there could be something wrong with the amp.
