Several companies make sensors for that sort of thing. I've seen a few versions hanging around Wal-Mart and Eurolite has a lighting controller as well.

the problem is that most sensors are based on volume level....there was a thread on another forum about sensors that picked up specific frequency ranges (can be programmed for ultra low frequencies, lows, mids and highs.) sounds like a huge PITA but would be awesome to see

I had found a DIY design for a device that reacts to specific frequency ranges. I'll try and scan it when I get the chance.

It needs a power source, and input from the audio source and it delivers power whenever a certan level of a certain frequency is delivered..

It's a very simple design and could easily be further developed to have different controllers reacting to different frequencies and going to different lights, all reading from one source, together on the same board as the components are few and rather small.

That's sounds pretty cool.  I was thinking of trying to do something like this in my jeep.  Firelizard, you still have the design for that?  I'm pretty much new to doing this stuff but if i can pass my EE class at college I should be able to figure this stuff out.  Or anybody for that matter, does anybody have some information or a direction to point me?
