i just had an alarm installed and was wondering if some can give me some pointers on how to adjust this sensor to its optimal setting?

Optimal is really the tricky word there. What you consider optimal and what others may consider optimal could vary considerably.
Anyway, Here is a link that explains how to adjust it.

I've installed a few of these. Make sure you place it in a place where you can adjust it easliy. From summer to winter the things gains and looses sensitvity.
I mounted 1 in the arm rest of the center console on 2 vehicles and they would change like the wind.
