I've used the violet white on these cars. Is it a 3.8L v-6?

It is a 3.1L V6.
I found the brake switch (finally!) but the wire really is hard to reach. Have you found an easier place to connect to it?

Should be able to get it in the actual column wiring plug.... white wire. Older GM (and some Dodges) use the turn signal filaments in the rear bulbs as brake lights. The brake signal passes through the turn signal cancelling ring in the column.
As far as tach goes..... much much easier to get an injector wire on the top of the motor. It will be the non pink on the injector.

I usually just unplug the brake switch plug and pull it down enough to tap the wire. You may be able to do as gus1 suggested and get it in the harness that runs to the turn signal switch. Test the wire first as there may be more than one white wire. You may also be able to find either a white or light blue wire in the harness that runs down the driver's side of the car under the carpet. I'm not sure as I have never looked for it there. As for the tach wire, PURPLE / white may work. Use a volt meter set to an A/C voltage scale and measure ffrom a good ground to the wire with the engine running. You should get a reading between 1 and 9 volts varying with RPM. On some
GM engines, connecting to this wire can cause the engine to be limited in it's RPM rate and cause engine problems at higher speed.

Thanks for the info...
The violet/white wire is actually listed on some wire diagrams as the tach, while others say it is a white wire. I used this one, because there are TWO white wires from the coil pack; would they both be tach? As I said, I measured a frequency from this wire which varied with engine speed. I hope it will be okay at high speed driving! (at least I have a heads up--can always cut it on the highway!)
