Hi there
Can someone please help me out?
I have a 1999 VW Mk4 Golf 1.6. I have recently had the car serviced, everything was fine until two weeks later. I noticed a slight hesitation from the engine when I accelarated after shifting into 2nd gear. I didnt make much of a big deal. Two weeks later, the engine seems to hesitate on every gear now after the car has warmed up. At one time when I was driving at around 50 mph, the hesitation was so bad, that I noticed the speedometer 'flicker' from 50mph to 20mph. This has happended several times now.
Someone suggested that it could be the spark plugs. Others suggested it could be the clutch.  When I say that the engine hesitates, I mean at times it feels like the petrol has just ran out or is not being passed through properly.
Can someone please help?
Thanks
Shaz

Shaz, does the vehicle still have warranty ? If so, bring it back tot he dealer to get it looked at. I remember hearing something about this on another VW ( the 06 Jetta ) and not sure if they found a fix for it. For starters I would look at the fuel filter ( in the engine bay ) , the distributor & also the plug wires.

Im a little hesitant to take it to the dealers cos they charge and arm and a leg.  Id rather keep that as last resort.

Iv fixed alot of problems in the past, but never have come across anything like this

That's why he asked if you still had a warranty.  Usually, I'd check basic maintenance parts as Jeff suggested.  I'd like to add to check for vacuum leaks as well.

It concerns me, though, that you stated your speedo started acting up.  I've had this problem before, but it was after an engine swap (*I wouldn't recommend having this done overseas- wait until you're back in your homeland and do it yourself.*), and the so-called "electricians" had simply twisted-and-taped (no solder, etc.) all the wires together (even under the hood).  After finding all the wires and adding solder to the joints, the problems simply dissappeared, never to rear their ugly heads again (wonder why Engine hesitates on acceleration -- posted image.).  The point is that although it had been two weeks since you'd had the car worked on, that could still be the cause of the problem.  It doesn't mean for sure that's the problem, but it's a possibility.  Maybe there's a loose ground somewhere.  Did you have any wiring/electrical work done?

My ex once told me I have a perfect face for radio.

check your spark plugs and wires...what brand was put in there when the car was serviced.

my friend had a audi a4 with similar probems.....we had used bocsh platnium plugs and the car ran terrible, we went to the dealer and bought factory plugs and wires and it ran fine after that.

hope this helps.....goodluck.

Also check the air filter and the "duct" running from the filter to the intake for cracks, etc. My Supra started acting like that and the duct or pipe had a crack in the underside of it. If they replaced the air filter they could have cracked this duct or maybe even placed the filter in wrong.

Sounds like might be a loose spark plug wire.
