So i have heard that you can make your Ipod car charger by splicing a USB extension cord into an auto adapter , and then just plugging the ipod cord into the usb extension. (i.e. http://www.instructables.com/ex/i/E4F0DC40DC6710289F96001143E7E506/)
so is this safe. and if it safe for my ipod, then what voltage, wattage... adapter should i get.
also if this works, is there a way that i could run a remote wire into is, so when the car stops sending power, the ipod with pause the music or turn off (like whith a monster adapter or when you pull out you head phones)

It tells you what kind of adapter you need in the link that you posted. 4.75v-5.25v cigarette lighter plug. If your cigarette lighter is on accessory power (dosent have power wher the car is off) then you can simply get a hardwire adapter and hack the plug open and hardwire it and run ya wire wherever you want. You can also do this behind the radio w/ either the red or blue/white...If its a factory radio check the12volts wiring database for factory wire colors. Use a DMM to test your voltage too, I cant afford an ipod much less fry one.GL

Using the deck's remote turn on lead to hardwire a device would not be a good idea.  You could easily fry the output transistor as this wire is usually only rated around 500 mA, and if you have any amps hooked up- well, you get the idea.  Even though the iPod does not need a large amount of charge current, it would be a sizeable burden on your deck.  You could connect a relay to overcome this problem, but then you'd have to have the source unit on for the charger to work.  You'd be better off using an accessory lead.
My ex once told me I have a perfect face for radio.

I can hook it up to my accesory but the only advantage to that is that it would stop charging when the car is off. This will not pause it.

Search the12volt for GM retained accessory, you'll need a relay...but you can keep it charging for awhile after the car is off.....on just do it on constant power

Soundgate actually makes a part for charging the Ipod in the car and it also has RCA ends on it. The part number should be AUXPDRCA.
