Okay, I have a 1968 VW Karmann Ghia, and it has no roof.  The roof was chopped off.  Here is an idea I had:

Ideas, thoughts.  There is one car out there that has a simular roof, it was in the movie Cannonball Run 2, but can't find any pics.

would the plexi roof stay suspended in air like that when it was opened?  or would you remove it?

The plexi-roof would be suspended, and removable.

Here is my second option.  The car has no windows, so this is why I am doing this.  Serious thought please.  Planning on builbing this asap.

Here is another diagram of the gullwing style with the gas assist shocks and mounting points.

Can you heat up plexiglas and bend it?

Yes, you can heat it up, but controlling what is bending of the object can be a problem if you do not control the amount of heat being applied.  Not being careful you can turn it into a "umbrella" looking thing.

I would say heat it up in sections and mold it to shape as you go.

I like your diagrams too.

What are you going to be about the wheather seals/stripping  and a "locking mechanism" to secure it when closed?

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

I think the second idea looks really cool.  It'd be really cool if you could hook up with a remote that would pop the latch and open the door.  it'd be pretty bad to see that clear roof open as you walk up to your car.

That would be cool!  Making notes and making a new diagram....

If you are going to do that and get more mechanical.  It would be cool if you attached an extension or link in between the the glass top and the actuators, in other words, the actual actuators won't have to show even though they will be moving the panels.

I am at work right now and do not have access to Illustrator, other wise I would draw what I am talking about, I will be home a little later.

Thanks guys.  I am getting a lot of help here, better than other forums that just critisize me to death.

I know of a guy in Austin that makes custom plexiglass stuff, and I am going to call him after I get all the spec and going to see if he can help out.
