i got a solo baric L7 DVC 4 ohm and want to get the most out of the sub. Gonna buy a new amp and needed some help. i pretty much have my mine set on getting a Hifonics amp cuz i have heard alot of good news about them, unless someome can convince me otherwise. which should i get 1) BXI 606 600 watts rms x 1 channel 1 ohm. or 2) BXI 1206 900 watts rms x 1 channel 2 ohm. should i under power the sub or over power the sub? dont want to damage the sub or amp obviously

I guess it depends on which enclosure you are putting the L7 in. also what size L7? you will be better off buying a bigger amp, if you underpower that woofer you will have a good chance of blowing the woofer up., distortion is a big killer. I would say out of the amps listed use the BXI1206.

For sure the bigger of the 2 hifonics would work great, How big of a box can you fit?

azn, you're mixing up a couple of uses of the word "distortion".  In regards to a speaker, distortion generally applies to the sound of a badly clipped signal.  Any music source, even the purest violin, can be played with or without distortion.  Let's say you have a recorded guitar solo that has a multitude of distortion built into it.  That music can be played cleanly without any distortion whatsoever in the playback equipment.  It would sound just as the artist intended for it to sound - distorted as hell - but the sine waves are well within the bandwidth and aren't flattening off at the peaks.  That is no hardship for the speaker.  Just because the music is recorded distorted doesn't mean that the speakers playing it back are going to exhibit distortion.  But it can also be played back distorted as well...if the amp is clipping badly.  Distortion upon distortion, egads.
Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Ic...well my view of distortion is just different than...On my guitar amp I can turn the clean volume up high enough where the speaker sounds like its clipping and distortion but it never fails.

Thats obvious.
Did you take just a little time to read and UNDERSTAND stevdart post? Your rock pedal Distortion is not the same as what stevdart is trying to explain to you.
