But it wouldn't be nearly as efficient and economical as just using a home theater amplifier

Using a car stereo amplifier in the house is never a recommended solution.  In fact, it can be very dangerous and much more expensive to do correctly (cost of power supply) than simply using an amp designed to operate off of house voltage.  Speakers are speakers and can be used anywhere for any purpose as long as the system is properly designed.  Electronics are a completely different issue.

i misread the post. for some reason i thought it was about car amps.car sub's at home - Page 2 - Last Post -- posted image. but agreed, speakers are speakers, as long as the system is set up properly, it shouldn't matter.
Whatever you do, DO NOT let the white smoke leak out of the wires.....
