dougyork,
When the battery in the Intelligent Key fails, here is what you do:
1. Put your finger on the little release lever on the backside of the Intelligent key, which allows it to split in half.
One of the halves is a standard metal key; use this to unlock the door and enter the car.
2. Insert the main part of the Intelligent Key into the slot on the dash, to the left of the steering wheel. Then, start the car the way you normally would.
--As far as I know, you can start and stop the car as many times as you want using this method, until you get the remote's battery replaced.
--It seems to me that this system should be just as reliable as any other car with a transponder-based anti-theft system (which most all modern cars have).
If the entire Intelligent Key fell into a garbage disposal or something likt that, and got totally mangled, well, I'd imagine you'd be stranded------but that would go just the same for "regular" cars too.

Hi,
For what I have read on the new '07's Fortin looks to have a solution. It is really different than what we have had to deal with in the past. For what I make of it they are bypassing the push button start all together. They have instructions on the CAN-SL regarding installation. Interfacing with a module behind the instrument cluster and under the hood. Looks like quite a job compared to what it used to be.
The CAN bus modules are pretty expensive as I am told by my distrubutors. I was quoted almost $100 for it.
I was really hoping that this new developement for a CAN bus bypass would also be able to start the car as well. It may be a part that will soon be in development.

In that post he suggests using the door trigger to shut down the starter. Even though the owner would have to re-start the vehicle when they got in, at least the vehicle is warmed up/cooled down.

What about using the reverse light?  If a thief want to steel the car durinfd the engine is on, when he move the shift to D it will pass thru R and the reverse light wire will get power for like a seg and it will shut down the engine.
