as far as not being able to modify the door cause it's not yours, if you buy one pre-made, there will be much less modifying to do.  The old doorknob will come out, and you just screw the automated one in its place.  And i think they're battery operated, so no wires to run.

we are not allowed to remove the lock.  They need to be able to get in if there was a problem....

Some models you can actually use the existing key cylinder, so there would be no outside evidence that you altered it.  The keyless deadbolt products are very standard and will work on just about any door, but of course dorms usually have very different hardware if they are old.  Since you cannot modify them, it sounds like it will be more of a waste of money and effort to rig something like that up.  I mean how hard is it to carry a key around when you are in college anyway.  I have a keyless deadbolt on my house, but that is very practical so my family can get in without a key and we can get in easy when carrying things.
