I've narrowed down my choices to the Eclipse AVN5500 and the Pioneer AVIC-D3. Either unit will be in a 2007 Subaru WRX. I have seen the Eclipse in action in a friends car, and liked what I saw, but I have never owned Eclipse before. I have had a lot of Pioneer products, and I'd buy the D3 but the reliance on the disc concerns me. I realize the Eclipse does as well, but you can leave it in the DVD slot and still use the CD slot. What are some opinions of the two? Either unit will be used with the ipod controls, but I also use CD's just as often. If it matters, the rest of the system consists of Focal 165K2P components up front, Focal 100CA coaxials in the back, driven by a Zapco Reference REF360.4, and 2 TC-1000 8" DVC's on a Zapco REF500.1.
Thanks all for the help in deciding!

im a big fan of Pioneer and the new AVIC-D3 is awesome. it has DSP and its menus are new and easy to navigate. not to mention that there are loads of options and are all reasonably priced. i just put one in an 07 Tahoe and it was just what the Dr. ordered! good luck in your search.

I would vote in the other direction Eclipse makes some of the best sounding HU on the market today and I have personally found that the Nav features are not only easier to use on the Eclipse but are faster as well. Don' t just take peoples random advice though go somewhere that has them on display and play with them and see which fits your needs best. If I remember correctly Circuit city should have both on display even if you don't want to buy from there at least you can play with them a bit.

I vote for the Eclipse. The shop I am at has installed both brands and I find that the Eclipse seems to have a cleaner, more intuitive interface. Like ferretvw said, if you are not sure still, hop to your nearest Circuit City and give them a test run.

I deal with both as a shop and if your ever going to amplify the speakers go with the Eclipse. I'll be getting the 5500 in my Tacoma in about 1 week narrowed down to two nav units, which one -- posted image.

Eclipse it is. Thanks everyone for your input. I already have the speakers and amps, they were from my old car and will be moving to the new one. I decided it was time to make the jump to the nav unit.

The Pioneer D3 is okay but if you want a Pioneer you should get the Z1 or the Z2. They both have a 30 gb harddrive for the navigation. No need for the navigation disc to be in for poi searching or finding addresses. Otherwise the Eclipse is a better unit than the D3. Plus the 5500 has 2 disc slots so you can still listen to cd's while using nav.

I was in the same shoes as you deciding which unit to buy. While Eclipse is nice it's more money. I bought the Pioneer for $700, dollar for dollar to me it was the better buy. Sure if money were no object I'd opt for the top of the line Pioneer with the 30 gig hd. The blue tooth is better on the Pioneer in my opinion, plus the Pioneer allows to change dash colors to match. Other options seem to be more expensive with the Eclipse too. With me it came down to price and better add ons. One other thing is that the Pioneer does not have the motorized front panel, that is something I think will go bad first or is more apt to have problems, less moving parts means less things to worry about. I find that Pioneer has a bigger network and is a bigger name, looking for things on Ebay for your unit Pioneer like add ons you'll always find more things for sale for your unit. Just some things to consider.
