I'm installing a train horn in my truck and trying to figure out how to wire a relay for it. What I'd like to do is be able to operate it using my stock horn button, but would also like to be able to use my stock horn when needed. I know I need to use a relay to be able to do this, and this is what I was thinking:

30-solenoid valve for train horn

86-horn button

87-12v constant

85-toggle switch

Any problems with wiring it this way? I believe the horn button when activated will be my ground. Seems like this would be a simple and easy way to wire it, but I may be totally wrong so somebody please enlighten me. Thanks for your help.

What about your regular horn? You show no wiring for it in the post.

Do you want a switch to swap horns?

Yes, that's what I'm using the relay as, a switch so I can switch between my regular horn and train horn. My hope was that by using the toggle switch, when it's off the relay will not be active so my regular horn will function as normal. However, when the toggle switch is on the relay will be active, so when I push the horn button it will sound the train horn instead of the regular horn. Will wiring the relay like I showed make it work like that? If not, how should I wire it? Thank you for helping out.

I don't understand why I need 2 relays, it's just the factory horn, I don't see why it wouldn't work just the same if the relay isn't active/armed. The toggle switch is an on/off switch, not to toggle between the two horns. I'm not going to attempt to draw one of those diagrams at the risk of being called a 3rd grader, but I will tell you in words what wires I know I need on the relay:

1 wire to the electric solenoid valve on the train horn

1 wire to 12v constant

1 wire to the stock horn button

1 wire to the on/off switch

What I can't figure out is what terminals on the relay the wires are supposed to go to, I know those numbers mean something but it isn't obvious. Sorry I'm such a putz, and thanks for tryin to help out.

If you press the horn pad and the switch is closed both horns go off. If the switch is open, only the stock horn goes off.

If that's what you are going for the diagrams should be of some help.

The 2nd relay will make the OEM horn not sound when the aftermarket horn does sound. I'm guessing that the 'train' horn will be loud enough that you won't be able to hear the OEM horn, so I don't think it's really necesarry.

You could also acomplish the same thing, but with only one relay by wiring the OEM horn output to pin 87A of a SPDT Bosch relay.

You need 2 relays because the horn needs a positive and the horn switch gives a negitive.

I could add another relay instead of the SPDT switch.
