How do you determine the the compressor side and switch side in the type of door locks after you cut the wire

Got to be  Benz, VW or Audi, VOLVO??  since when? Audi since early '90s and VW used lock/unlock triggers. I think our friend is looking for a polarity change, got to be Benz, r/h side blue in floor loom, left hand side green at l/h floor loom, side going to rear of vehicle is compressor, to front (doors ) is switch.
