Replacing Head Unit

Hi,

I'm trying to replace the stock head unit from a 2000 Hyundai Elantra GLS with a new CD player. I bought a harness to go from the Hyundai plug to the back of the new head unit (ISO). I've checked wiring diagrams, and everything checks out. However, when I fire everything up, the lights in the buttons come on, but there's nothing on the display and no sound.

I brought the unit back to the store where I bought it, the guy tested it out, and everything worked perfectly there. When I put the stock unit back in, it works fine.

I did notice that the stock unit had a 7.5 amp fuse in the back, while the new unit had a 15 amp fuse. The fuse panel had a 10amp fuse in the radio slot. I replaced that with a 15, but it didn't help. Does anyone have an idea as to what might be going on?

Where did you ground the HU to ? Did you use the OEM ground or did you ground it elsewhere ? Check to make suer that the ground is good. All that is required to make the HU function properly is the switch ignition, constant and ground. If all these are properly connected, you shouldn't have any problems with the display.

Thanks for responding!

The connector in the car has a black lead that according to the schematic is the ground. However, there is also a single black wire with a female flat blade connector that attached to the chassis of the stock radio. Should I attempt to use THAT one as the ground instead?

I'm still stumped, though as to why the buttons on the unit would light up but nothing else, if there's power getting to the unit.

I went and got a tester. I ran the voltmeter from the ignition wire to ground and from the battery wire to ground.  Both times I got readings of a bit over 12v. I also did not connect the speakers so as to avoid any possible issues there. Still the same problem. I'm totally stuck. I'm almost at the point of giving up, but not yet.

use that extra lil ground wire you said there was.  Thats all you need.   Right now you just don't have a strong enough ground.

I tried that. Same result. The buttons light up, but no display and no sound.

Does the car have a factory amp? What kind of CD player?

All there is in the car are 4 speakers: one in each front door, and one on each side behind the rear seats. The CD player is a Roadstar CD-655USWM/FM (Swiss brand). Nothing fancy; 4x40 watts.

Maybe try cutting the ground wire off of the harness and connect it to a known good ground. Use your meter to make sure that the resistance between your ground point and the batt. neg. terminal is less than 1 ohm.

  Try unplugging the harness right from the back of the deck and check the voltage right at the point of the deck especially the ignition wire I have found that some Clarion decks light up like you are saying when the constant is hooked up but the ignition is not getting power.
