Open the car door, find the hinges that hold the door to the chassis of the car. Somewhere between the 2 hinges on the chassis of the car look for a protruding pin that is pressed in by the door when the door is closing. If it is not there, look where the rear of the door meets up with the chassis of the car, is there a protruding pin there? Once you find the pinswitch, that wire should be connected to the back of that pin.

If the pin switch has only one wire connected to it, then yes it must be mounted in order for it to wirk.
