Starter kill switch for 2001 Durango

Greetings all! I searched the archives for an answer to my question. Unfortunately I was unsuccessful. Hopefully someone here can help me out. I would like to put a hidden switch in my truck, a 2001 Dodge Durango SLT, (with the 4.7L eng. and PT4WD) which when activated will allow the engine to crank, but not turn over, thereby disabling the starter. I have seen battery kill switches that disable the battery, but if I install one of these, won't I have to reset my radio stations and clock every time I start the truck? I would appreciate it, if someone here could advise me of the correct way to go about installing this switch. What size switch should I use, what guage wire, and would I install a relay between the kill switch and the starter, or should I go thru the ignition switch instead? I have an 2002 durango R/T and it comes with the sentry key you can add it from the dealer that way you wont have to carry anything . or flip a switch.Joe O'Byrne

The plastic panel in front of your knees will come down with three screws. The wiring going up to the steering column is easily seen, and the starter wire is yellow. If you use a heavy switch, you won't need a relay. Simply cut the yellow wire in half and connect both ends to the switch. If you have to extend the wires, use wire that's just as thick as the yellow one. If you want to use a smaller switch for whatever reason, you can just use the switch to activate a relay. There are many ways to set up the relay, but one important consideration is that you mustn't set it up so that the relay can stay on all night, or the battery will go dead.
