If the headunit is turning all the way off, lights and all.  The radio is losing voltage on the Yellow wire.  Where do you have the amplifier's power wire connected?

Is the head unit turing off completely or is it just cutting out?  Are you powering door speakers off the head unit?

Then it sounds like you have a short somewhere.  Disconnect all your speakers and see if the head unit still does the same thing.

Instead of disconnecting the speakers, balance left and listen to it.  Then balance right, listen to it again.  If it cuts off with only one or the other channel playing, there is probably a problem with the speakers or the wiring of the channel that is making it cut off.  If both channels play fine by themself, chances are you have a voltage drop problem on the yellow wire of your radio.
