what do i need to do in order to change the head unit in a mustang with the mach 460 system? can i simply do it with a metra 70-5510 harness? and just feed the low level from the new head unit to the factory ford amp?

Well you can either by-pass that amp..or you can re-wire the whole car.

The Metra 5510 harness uses the 8-pin rectangular gray plug for the head unit's power supply and RCAs going to a square black plug for the audio output, am I correct?
If that's the case then you should be able to run the low level into the factory amp without any problems.

If you want to be absolutely sure, do a profile for the member MetraTech.  He is tech support for Metra, and probably knows more about harness's than anyone else.  Good luck
