hi all, did not think this would be a tough vehicle. I am installing a remote start on a 1995 gmc safari van and am having a heck of a time locating the ignition harness. I have removed the lower panel and can see what i believe is the ignition wires, high up above the steering column. i also think they are located in the large loom by the colunm as well. However i can not locate the purple or possibly yellow start wire in this large loom. Can anyone tell me an easier location for these wires, or a suggestion as to how to get to them. Any help or prior experience with this would be greatly appreciated.

The PURPLE (STARTER/CRANK) wire is located in the SRS (AIR BAG) HARNESS, there are (2) PURPLE wires in this harness, use the HEAVY GAUGE PURPLE wire THAT DOES NOT have a fuse in it.

Thanks for the reply dea,can, the information i have says the start wire for the 95 is in the ignition harness and the 94 is in the air bag harness. it looks like i only have one purple wire in the air bag harness any way. I am having a tough time getting to ANY of the ignition harness. any other suggestions?

I did one 2 weeks ago and it was 12 gauge purple wire. I'm not 100% but I think it was to the left of the column. I do remember it was a pain to access ignition wires and that the start wire was seperate.

thanks jeremy, I have found a purple wire that is with the other ignition wires at the top of the column, but it is in the yellow sleaved air bag harness and looks like it runs toward the fire wall were it is fused. Paperwork says not to use this wire but it sure looks like it is the start wire as is is in the same connector as the rest of the ignition wires mounted at the top of the steering column. any ideas, and is there a danger in putting a meter on this wire.

Are all the ignition wires in the sleave? As far as metering this wire I don't as another local shop has popped a couple of bags now, not sure how they managed that one. Anybody else have any ideas???

My listings show that the starter wire is yellow. The best way to get to the ignition harness is to remove the shifter solenoid on the right side of the steering column and the long thin plug that is close to it. Remove the steering column support nuts and drop the steering column down at bit. You can then disconnect the blue and black plug that hold all the ignition wires. There are two catches for each plug to release. I can't remember which one of the plugs has to come out first, as it overlaps the other one. You can then reroute the ignition harness to a point where you can safely tie into the wires. Make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable prior to doing this to prevent any accidentaly short circuits. It is not easy and there isn't alot of room to make your connections, but it is the best method I know of.

My diagrams also show yellow as the start wire but after scratching my head and testing it was purple. Never tried dropping the column, sounds like it would have made life alot easier though..

Hey guys, thanks for all the help. Just finished the install and it was indeed the purple wire at the top of the column. and this wire also was in the air bag yellow sleave. also did in fact drop the column down to get to the ign wires,could not see another way of doing it. Once again thanks for all the replies and the help

I did a 95 Astro and indeed it baffled the hell out of me. The starter wire was purple and was wrapped into the airbag harness just like yours. I had to drop the column to make sure that was the correct wire coming off the ign switch and indeed it was.
