I need to wire my wiper motor to a dash mounted switch and remove it from the steering column.  Does anyone have a wiring diagraphm for the 76 Chevette that shows the wiper motor wire colors?  Thanks, I am new to this site.

Is the switch still semi functional?  Do you have a volt meter?  The following wires are needed for your motor to operate.  It needs an ignition power source.  There will be a wire for low speed, and another for high speed.  And of course a ground.  If the switch is still kind of working, you may be able to identify at least a couple of the wires.

Yes the switch is functional.  It is acutally in a Kit Car mounted on a Chevette frame.  The cab is so tight that my knee turns on the wipers everytime I get in.

Thanks for the idea of using the existing switch to identify the wires.  The green wire and the two black wires plug into, what I believe is probably a relay and then go from there.  I will try to see where they go.  The two black wires are connected together.  The remaining wires don't appear to be used.

Do I need to leave the relay, or what ever it is, connected or should I bypass it?

Forgot to mention that the steering column and wiring harness under the dash are from the original Chevette.

The Ignition wire I mentioned earlier is to keep power on the motor until it reaches home.  When you turn the switch off, it has to have the ignition wire or it would stop in the middle of the windshield.  Let us know if you need any help.

Thanks for your guidance.

Could you tell me the purpose of the relay?   Since this is a kit car, several wires had to be lengthened and who ever did the wiring, did not use the same color wire.  Also, the fast speed was not wired in and two of the prongs on the relay were spliced together.  It is so tight under the dash, I am not sure I can the wires from the motor to the existing switch in the steering column.

I am not even sure if it has a the Chevette wiper motor or something else.  The kit car manual says to use a VW wiper motor, so I assume that is what I have.

If I understood the purpose of the relay, I may be able to rewire everything and hook up the fast speed.

Thanks!

Generally a relay is used to power a high current device, motor or heater element, etc.  You can use a low current capable switch to control the relay.  I am sure that the wiper switch in the car has small wires and can not handle the current demands of the wiper motor.

Spanner throwing time, I've never seen a relay for regular wipers, could this have been a timer relay for intermittant wipe?  The casing should be longer than standard.
