01 pontiac grand am

Hello there, i need your help on my 01 pontiac grand am, i changed my power steering pulley, now my the problem is when the engine is running the radio wont turn on, but when shut the engine off the radio will turn on, then the engine wont start anymore...please help...thanks

Very weird problem you have. You may have causd some sort of logic lock in a component. Try disconnecting the negative (not the positve) battery cable for at least 5 minutes. Reconnect it then see how things work.sparky

is it the factory radio or aftermarket?

I did disconnecting the battery for over night same problem..the radio is after market..everything is working but its not working at the same time...when the engine is on, radio wont turn on,,when i shut the engine off i cant start it again..maybe my battery is dying?? I checked my battery the was 9.56v, is that a good battery?thanks

your battery should never fall below 11.5V at rest. you could have something that it pulling a lot of extra current and staying on all the time or you could just have a bad battery. is it a wet cell battery? does it have enough water in it?

9.5V should only be hit whilst cranking. If it's 9.5V after being charged at ~14V (even 13V), then it's stuffed. Probably a collapsed cell. If it's been sitting a while uncharged, it may be recoverable. But if it's old, I wouldn't bother. Even if new, its future may be risky. You changed you power steering pulley? You did not change your crank pulley nor alternator pulley? IE - you have not changed the alternator spin rate (hence maybe undercharging is running slower). And you replaced the alternator belt; did not knock or break any connections; and confirmed the alternator spins properly and is outputting more than the battery voltage? (Normally 13.8-14.4V, but a bad battery or other drain could pull that down.)

Changing a pulley should not effect the electrical system (assuming you put the drive belts back on and they are tight.)  You damaged or disconnected something else.  Have your vehicle's electrical system tested.  And yes, if your battery is reading 9.5 volts, it is dead and likely will need replacing (you could try charging it first, but get your system tested at a mechanic's shop and if the battery is gone they can tell you.)Support the12volt.com

the car has a spring belt tensioner, if the PS pulleys were the same size, the belt tension should not have changed unless the belt was routed incorrectly upon reassembly.

how long have you hd that radio in the car?

unplug the radio and see if the car will always starts. if it does, recheck you constant power and switched power wires going to the radio. they may be swapped.
