I just bought a new vehicle and am trying to plan out a system. Its a 4-door 02 Explorer, and I know large cabins generally require larger subs, but would 8" sub's still sound okay? I want to make the system completely hidden, so I plan to make a fiberglass enclosure that fits in the floor where my jack and stuff normally go. The problem is that I can't fit anything bigger than 8's unless I raise the box out of the floor, and I'd really like to keep it flush. I'll make 10's fit if I have to, but would 8's give some decent bass? I haven't picked the subs yet, so suggestions there are welcome. I already have a Soundstream Rubicon II 302 that I would like to use. I am considering getting a pair of Kicker Comp VR 8" subs. Any pros/cons for these? I'm not looking ro wake up the neighborhood, just good clean bass. Would 8" subs be a waste in an SUV?

8" subs in a suv will be a waste.

maybe for mid bass...not for low tones.

i have two 8's in a 00 sentra- ma's car..just to fill in the audio gap. makes a difference...but i dont think you'll hear them too good.

I need quality equipment, feel free to donate.

Thats what I was thinking, but wanted to get some other opinions. Do you think a pair of 10's will be adequate? My brother has a single 12 (Image Dynamic with a Kenwood amp) in his Explorer and its pretty loud. I have an Infinity Kappa Perfect 10 that I had in my mustang with the Soundstream amp and it sounded really good, but I'm sure it will be lacking in the much larger SUV. I guess I need to either squeeze in a 12 or get another Kappa 10 and a bigger amp.

go to more mb quart speakers. then the number is RWC304...not bad for $99

its 160rms. they sound grand.

Ok since I'm an Explorer owner i have to get in on this topic...lol...Your thinking on this is all wrong. You are used to subs being in a enclosed trunk, imagine what it would be like being in that trunk with those subs pounding, be alot louder wouldn't it?!? Now in the suv, the cabin is the trunk on a larger scale. There is no seat to absorb any of the sound coming off the subs, just a nice wide open space. I run two 10's in mine with 600 rms on them and its stupid loud and intense in it for just two 10's. Personally i think some good 8's with good clean power on them will sastify what you are wanting. I run Diamond Audio CM3 series, entry level subs but are very impressive. http://www.diamondaudio.com/MobileAudio/index.cfm?page=Subwoofers

In about 2-3 weeks i plan on putting a single Diamond 8" in my wifes F-150 supercab  to give it a little bump.

I've never used 8's in any installs myself, but I just recently was shopping around for subs for an install I'm doing for a friend, and demo'd an 8" Alpine Type R in a bandpass box.  It kinda scared me how loud that thing got!  I'm not sure if you would have enough room, or would want to attempt building a bandpass box, but I know that that sub in an open cabin would definetly sound good.

I've tried on a few 8's. They work pretty well in enclosed spaces like standard cab trucks. Having owned a Blazer, I also feel obligated to get in on this one too. I had two JL 10's in my Blazer and they sounded much better than I thought they would. (After copious amounts of Dynamat) A single MB Quart, Diamond, or Infinity 10 or 12 would sound pretty sweet assuming it's powered correctly and in an appropiate box.

I'm glad to hear from the SUV owners here.  I appreciate the help.

When I had the single 10" Kappa Perfect with the Soundstream amp in my Stang it sounded good.  Not all that loud, but it was deep and clean, and obvious that I had a sub.  Basically what I', looking for in the Explorer.  Would the exact same setup (same amp, sub, box, etc...) be louder in the open cabin of the Explorer than it was in the trunk of my Stang?

Thanks

Greg

in my opinion, the exact same setup in a suv will be louder than in the trunk of a car.  there is not much blocking the sound from reaching your ears in an suv, but in a trunk of a car, its has to pass through the rear seats.

If you use enough of them they can be suitably loud.
I was at a show and a guy had 8 8s custom installed, and they pounded.
In an SUV I'd go with no less than 4.
