im not asking how to do it, because i have come across more than enough information on this site as to how to wire this up. I am just wondering why people do this, and what benifits this gives?

check out bcae1.com. Look through the series/parallel basics page in the menu on the right side. There is more info there than you'll ever need to know.

Here's a great tech paper on everything you wanted to know about dual voice coil subs, and much you didn't know that you wanted to you.  You know? switching subs from series to parallel? -- posted image.

Two possible reasons are:  a change in the number of subs, and a change in the type of amplifier (one channel or two channel).  Another could be:  switching an everyday system for use in a competition, such as running at 4 ohms for everyday listening and changing to 1 ohm for a comp.  wiring
Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.
