hi just wanted to know if anyone knows of a speaker tester to check phase. I think i had seen one once with a little green and red light on it. I know you can use the battery but you cant tell if its in phase or out of phase with out actully looking at the speaker

the thing w/ the red and green lights on it is a test light, which is not something you wanna get...get yourself  a  DMM. As far as checking for proper phase, looking is the best way if you cant hear the diffrence. good advice is to use something common to you when installing the speakers to insure that you have it correct.Maybe someone else can describe it better than me, GL

There are phase checkers available and Yes some have green and red lights on them. No they are not electronic test lights or have anything to do with a DMM.
With an electronic tester you can test phase without removing the grill or door panel. Visual works with larger speakers, however tweeters, HLCD or dome midrange
and you might still be guessing.
TurboSound (pro audio) makes a two unit tester. One is a transmitter and the other a reciever. The reciever has a small microphone and a Green and Red Led. The transmitter sends out a signal, you then place the reciever in front of the speaker and there ya go. If you are testing ported subs, the reciever will show out-of-phase near the port.
I think David Navone has one for sale at autosound 2000.
