AA buddy of mine sold me a 12 inch MTX thunder 4000 8ohm sub and a phaser Linear 240 watt amp, I hooked everything up properly but it sounds kinda crappy, any ideas as to what the problem is?

Do you know the specs on the amp? The amp is probably rated for 4 ohm, not 8ohm. The speaker might only be getting half power.

ifIf the amp is only rated for 4 ohm, does that mean that I need to find a new amp or is there something I can do?

It's not a problem, car audio amplifiers are rated for the MINIMUM load they can handle.  Placing higher impedance loads on them is just fine.

What kind of enclosure is the speaker in?  Also, "Phase Linear" car audio amps are very marginal quality, so you cannot push it too hard or it will generate 100% distortion.

tThe enclosure is sealed box, and I'm guessing that the amp is why it kinda sucks, is there any decent, cheap amps?

I'd get a kenwood over a sony amp.
Sony 440 watt would be crap.
