To being I would like to state that I am a complete newbie to car audio.
I would like to place a budget system in my 2001 s10.
I want great sound quality and that's it.
I mostly listen to rock, but still want hard hitting bass.
I was thinking maybe just one 12 and would like to upgrade my whole speaker system.
Head unit, front and dash speakers. sub, and an amp.
Will i have to upgrade my altenator or anything else?
Any help would be appreciated.

i have 2 rockford fosgate p2's and before my rockford amp got stolen i could hit 130 with really good sq. now i have a cheap amp that is underpowering them so i only hit 127.6db with a 128.4db peak. btw this is in a sealed box so because your going to put it in a truck i would go ported, will lose some sound quality but bass output will be better. with my rockfords i did have them in a poorly build ported box and could hardly tell a difference in SQ. how much do you want to spend on a subwoofer/entire system. as for your speakers i have JL audio that sounds awsome but maybe out of your price range. as for good brands on speakers i have had infinity and they where an alright first setup and had pritty good SQ. hope this helps, and give us some more info on how much you would like to spend.

sound quality is in the ear of the listener. demo as many component sets as you can, with music of your choice. as a general with car audio . if it seeems to good to be true . most of the time it is. as far as the alternator. most budget systems are within the limits of your s10's eletrical system. whats your budget

No you would not need to upgrade your alternator with just 1 amp

From your experiences can you give me opinions on brands to choose from? Subwoofers and all...
Also being a newb, would I use the amp for dash and front speakers aswell as the sub or would i use the headunit for dash and front speakers?

There are many decent brands out there that are going to give you decent perfromance. I would suggest stopping at you local audio shops and listen to what they have, take some of your own music in and try it. Alternator selection depends on your current demand, the bigger you go the more you need power (amperage) and money........

Just looks cheesy and CHEAP
