Hey everybody, I just installed a Viper 5301 Remote start system on my 2003 Ford F150. The problem I am having is, now that everything is wired up, the locks work, the lights, the horn, but when I try to remote start it, it sends an error to the remote, and the lights flash 7 times. From what I read on here, I believe that means that it is in default manual mode. So how do I change it to automatic mode? I do have the toggle in and switched on. Any ideas on what might be wrong? Thanks in advance.

Go to the "Downloads" section of this site and search on "Viper 5301". Download the install guide and go to page 42. It will guide you in changing the Vipers configuration. You want to change Menu 3, Menu Item 1, to Option 2 for automatic trans.

Thanks for the quick reply. So I did that, went in, and followed its instructions. Turn ignition on then off, held the valet till it beep 3 times for menu 3, then press the lock button till it beep twice. then released the valet button. after a little bit, the horn does a quick beep, then a long one on top of it. Then I press the start on the remote and get the same error.

7 flashes means you are still in MTS.

Think you have to press the unlock button to get Option 2. ( Page 43, Step 4 )

Tried it with the unlock, no good. Still does the long horn at the end. And I try to start it and it still sends and error and flashes 7 times.

Follow the setps starting on page 42 and 43 to change the transmission mode. It can be tricky and may take a few trys but follow the steps.

So you were right, after a few trys with the programming, it works! Well, it cranks, but doesn't turn over, unless I leave the key in the ignition. Some reason the bypass I bought ( the type that you put a spare key in the bypass module) isn't working, unless I wired it wrong. There are 3 wires, yellow, black, and red. Red is for 12v constant, yellow is for a "Key Sense" (If needed) which is it needed on the 03 f150, and black is for "Negative Run" or "Negative Ignition" output on your remote start system. Which I hooked it up to the blue Status Output on the 5 Pin harness. Is this right?

What is the model of the bypass?

You might want to consider a bypass from Fortin www.ifar.ca or something from expresskit. www.xpresskit.com . I have used the Fortin products with very good results and you don't loose a spare key.

Bypass connections sound OK. Two things you might check. The spare keys' position / location in the box and the antenna position / location and # of wraps ( if not a pre-formed loop ) around the ignition cylinder.

So got everything working. However, my dumb@#$ forgot to clip a wire when I tucked the unit up under the dash and it shorted while driving. Now The truck won't start with the key, only with the remote start. Any ideas? I'm about ready to give up on this project. viper 5301 on 2003 ford f150 -- posted image.
