I made the mistake Saturday taking a customer supplied system to Install. It was a design tech deluxe. First tip should have been it came with a VHS tape so im sure it sat somewhere for a long time (when is the last time you saw a VHS tape) but the customer came back today saying out worked good for the first 2 days. But now you have to be right on the car for it to work. I went and tested it and she is right you almost have to sit in the drivers seat for it to work. Tried putting new batteries inthe remotes and same problem, unplugged and tried to reset module neither fixed it.
Any ideas ?

Check the antenna connections to make sure they are tight. If so then its probably either a bad antenna or a bad remote... no easy way to tell which one.

check for a pinched antenna cable, try removing power and grounding it elsewhere.

The antenna wire is ok as far as the connection its an RCA plug plugged all the way in she got mad and left so I cant check the power or ground.
I told her when I put it in there was no warranty and that I thought it was an old cheap system.   That aside I wouldve liked to check the ground its on a bare metal bracket next too the steering column thats welded to the rest of the dash frame

Is the dash frame welded to the chassis? On some vehicles it is only bolted and on a rare occasion it is bolted through a rubber mount to allow movement. If she returns I would check the resistance between the ground at the unit and the battery.

Good idea it looked to be directly welded to a flange then bolted to the body. If she comes back im thinking I will move the ground to a different location and give that a try
