viper 5904 , 2012 legacy

I have been thinking about getting the Viper 5904 for my 2012 Legacy GT, but I have been calling different install places and it looks like it will run me at least $700. I checked Amazon and see I could definitely save a bunch if I installed the system myself. I am no stranger to wiring electronics or using a multimeter, but I have never done an alarm install. Could someone point me in the right direction as to how to install it? I see there is a wiring diagram for the 2010 legacy. Is this the same for the 2012 legacy gt? I was also looking at the IDatalink bypass. Does anyone suggest a different one?

The 2010 - 2012 models should be the same. Your best bet is to do the install with a full featured bypass module. The iDatalink module is an excellent choice, but you must find a source that will flash it with the correct firmware for your application. There are online sellers that will do this for you.   Please note that iDatalink shows the use of two ADS AL-CA modules, one for locks, etc and a second one for the transponder bypass. Unless you are a dealer with access to the KLON area of their WEB site, you will not be able to do the transponder bypass with a module. Instead, you can do the key-wrap method using the valet key. Another option is the EVO-ALL from Fortin. Not sure of the exact firmware version needed for your application. The Fortin site also has WireColor that, for a small fee, you can access their wire guide listing that includes photos. ( With an EVO-ALL module, you get a one vehicle access pass to WireColor.) Additionally, your Legacy has two Starter, one Ignition and two Accessory circuits. This will require an additional external 30/40 Amp SPDT relay with fuse to properly power all ignition circuits for a remote start. Do not want to cause any problems, as I am sure you are electronically capable, but what you are planning to do will require a bunch of research. The Viper system you are planning to use is a full featured, sophisticated unit. Viper tries to restrict the full installation guide and documentation to only their dealers and will not provide Tech Support or a warranty for your DIY install. The guides are not user friendly and contain industry / manufacturer specific terminology. If your vehicle has a manual transmission, a proper / safe clutch bypass is necessary.   While you might be able to obtain all the parts for less that $400, the dealer price of $700 includes a lifetime warranty and will be installed in hours. The $300 profit is for the dealers experience and vehicle knowledge.    That being said, there are many very knowledgeable forum member that can assist you with the install.Soldering is fun!

Thank you very much for the information. I think I may just bite the bullet then and have it installed by a pro to make sure I don't screw anything up.

Just keep in mind that if you choose to do it yourself, you will be throwing away all technical support and any warranty offered by the manufacturer... so IF anything goes wrong with the unit, you will be screwed. Also, I can almost guarantee that whatever you find online will be a refurbished unit. None of the higher end brands (DEI, Compustar, etc) have Amazon, Ebay, etc as authorized dealers and do not sell to them. Therefore they must purchase the units from outside sources...usually being a refurbishment dealer. I speak out of experience. I picked up 2 DEI units from Amazon before I started my business and later found out both were refurbished, and both of them crapped out on my after a year (one) and 2 years (the second).
