Surely someone has wanted to add automatic headlights to a jeep patriot, compass or dodge caliber?

There is no "trigger wire" for the headlights. The headlight switch communicates with the TIPM through data. You will have to tap into the headlight wires using relays.
Left: Low beam WT/DB. High beam WT/PK.
Right: Low beam VT/RD. High beam WT/GY.
These wires come from the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) to the head lamps.

But I realized that won't light up your dash lights as the cluster also receives communication through data.
If you are comfortable with taking the headlight switch apart and see if it's possible to mimic it's operation by wiring in relay, that may be your only option to triggering the headlights..
