Hello,
I'm looking to install some keyless entry on an 80's Jeep Cherokee. I was looking into using an Avital 3100LX and DEI 524N and 524F actuators.
I have a question about the operation of the 5-Wire actuators.
I have found the following description:
Up - White & Black Connected
Down - Brown & Black Connected
Now my question, are these momentary or do they stay connected? If I were to wire these up like a normal door switch I'm concerned the relays would never shut off if these aren't momentary.

They should be momentary and only have output when it the most extreme position in either direction like all other 5 wire actuators. They are also connected to two relays, one for lock and one for unlock, for any slave actuators.
~wirewise~ Verify all wiring with your meter before making any connections!

Thank you so much, I've been googling for hours but i could not find ANY information on the operation.
I should've just asked here first and saved myself 2 hours.

5-wire actuators are usually linked to a controller of some sort. DEI had one years ago, SPAL has one. The switch contacts in the actuator can indeed stay latched open or closed, depending on the positioning of the linkage. The controller converts the switching action to a pulse that reverses polarity for lock or unlock. The switches can be used for other purposes.

Well now we are back to confused. This was my initial suspicion, that I would need some mechanism to convert the latched to pulsed output.
Should I forgo the 5 wire actuator and just use a 2 wire?

Not familiar with the 3100LX wiring. If it has negative lock and unlock outputs, relays would still be needed with actuators. An external switch for operating the relays, and therefore the locks is easily added. Now if you are looking for a central locking type actuation (operate lock/unlock on the door, mechanically moving the linkage) this is when the controller and 5-wire actuator is used.

Yeah it just has the standard outours.
I guess I was hoping to get away with not using a separate switch but that seems like it's more work then it's worth.
