Hey,
I just purchased a 2004 Infiniti G35X, and will be moving to a city soon so I want to get a security system. Call me paranoid, but I'm getting the works. Complex security system, Remote starter, and a GPS Locater. I've been looking at Viper, starting with the 7900 and the 5900. I saw that there are a lot of problems that seem to be popping up with the new 7900, so I'm leaning towards the 5900.
I've never dealt with an aftermarket security system, and I was just wondering how easy it is to install. I am wondering if I should install it myself, or have it professionally done. I have installed stereo systems, but that is about the extent of my wiring experience.
Also, what would be a good system to go with? I want window break, shock sensor, remote start with preferably defroster activation, and of course a long range. I am looking at spending somewhere around $500 starting off plus the service for the GPS locater device.

There is a big misconception when it comes to getting it "professinally installed'.  Just because its a shop it does not mean that they are true professionals.  Can you do it yourself, sure you can but are you willing to invest time and or do you have experience with a vehicles wiring system?  As for what system you should get i would recommend the 5900.  I live in "they city" and have excellent range with it.  You also need a bypass module for your vehicle so the cost will be more. When getting the 5900 you must get the 210v for GPS location but be advised that you will have to pay a yearly fee for the service.  You also mentioned the window break, shock sensor and a whole bunch of sensor stuff which in theory of course will cost way more.  If you want the works then go for the DIY.  If you were to come me for the works then I would easily charge a minimum of 1600 bucks which will include everything. Good Luck though and if you need help with wiring it you can always ask and most likely it will be answered.

Alright, thanks for all of the information, I will post when I figure out what I end up doing. I know of a couple of shops around that are certified by Viper, and one has been recommended to me numerous times, so I will go get a quote from them. If I end up wiring it myself, I will definitely post for help if needed.
Glad I found this website in my searches, as it has already helped a lot.

One more thing,
When I meant the works, I meant an alarm that had the works. Not additional things, and the Viper 5900 has shock sensors and what looks like windowbreak sensors built in, or at least thats what the website appears to describe it as having...
Secondly, audiopete is there any specific reason you would recommend the compustar over the viper? I have been looking and it looks like they are comparable brands, but I haven't been able to find much in terms of long term usage (a few months even) as to the battery life, range, sensitivity, things like that. I also am wondering the price difference. I have been looking for a while now and I can rarely find any actual prices on these units short of eBay.

Viper/DEI does not certify any shops, they are authorized dealers. Just because they sell them doesn't mean they are worth a doodie installing them. If your after a  2way system stick with compustar, if you look into it they have been pumping out 2 way systems for a long time-reliable and tons of features....Oh and battery life with any long range 2 way is limited, we have been getting roughly 6-8 weeks out of the 900 series 2 way..

Is your G35X an automatic or manual? If its a manual, you will definately want to go with a Compustar.
I installed DEI products from about 2000 to 2005. I have installed Compustar since 2005. They both make very nice units. Of the two, I prefer Compustar. I have the 2W900FM-AS on my own car.
DEI remotes usually go through a battery about every 4 weeks. I change the battery in my Compustar about every 6-8 weeks. I also agree with what audiopete said above about what unit to go with. DEI systems do not include windowbreak systems. It does have the capability to add it on...as does Compustar. $500 will not be enough for the unit/installation/features you are looking for. I would probably expect around $700-$900 for the features you listed in your first post.
More important than the unit you choose will be the skill level of the installer. A poorly installed system will just cause lots of false alarms and other problems. Find a shop/installer you are comfortable with, and more than likely they will carry a good quality product. Most of the professional installers on this board are very dedicated at what they do, and they care about the quality of the work they do. They wouldn't be spending their free time here if they didn't. Then you have other installers that don't try to learn outside of work, and are just doing it for the paycheck. If you post what city you are from, you may find someone on here that could do the work for you.

Alright, I'm definitely glad that I came to this site.
First off, my G35 is an automatic. Wanted the manual, but when its used and in as nice condition as I got it in, I don't complain.
I live around Oneonta, NY. Roughly halfway between Oneonta and Norwich. I'm about an hour from Cooperstown (Baseball Hall of Fame), and about an hour from Utica or Binghamton. If there is anyone in the area, please let me know, and if not, I think I may have a dealer picked out. The guy I bought my car from (used car dealer, been family friends since I was 6), sends all of his cars to a place in Binghamton, so I might just go there if no one here is around.
Ideally, the system I want is one that has decent protection, early warning system so that possible thieves know not to mess with my car, but I want it to have shock sensors (depending on how pricey they would be to add on), and I'm thinking that windowbreak sensors are a little bit overboard, and probably pretty pricey. I want to have a remote start system on it, with decent range if it's possible, and as long as it is just a basic battery, I wouldn't mind replacing every couple of months, as long as it doesn't require ripping the entire car apart again to do so. I want a GPS locater, so that if the car IS stolen, I will be able to retrive it quickly, and also so that I can monitor it.
From what I have seen, the two models I would be looking at are the Viper 5900 with the 210v gps locater, or a Compustar Pro P2W9000FMR with whatever their GPS locater is. Looking like that is going to total up to around 700-900 in the end?
Thanks again for all of the great info and help everybody.

Sorry buddy I would of helped but im located in NYC.  Well here I would charge 600(including infiniti bypass) for the 5900 and to add the 210v would range between 500-800 plus the yearly subscription to DEI.  Although the 210v can be cheaper im pretty sure its over 300 bucks.  I would also recommend getting a backup battery and backup siren which will surprise a thief when they open the hood and disconnect the battery the alarm will still be active and when they cut the siren it will also still go off.
