Well, you just can't top mine.
Fargin bastich Cougar got into our barn last night. Now normally a barn holds livestock etc. Well when your other half refers to your home as the Totally Useless Animal Sanctuary or Bev's Bleeding Heart Animal Farm, the livestock are actually pets with names.
If you have never seen a cougar attack, it is not something you want to. Luckily we had Abbott the goat in with Paris and Nicole the sheep. We figure that Abbott (the little ***hole that he is), reared up and butted the couger but good as it was attacking his girls.
Nicole has many bites to her head, Paris had been mauled severely and reqired an immediate emergency visit by the vet to sew her back up. Hopefully she'll pull through, otherwise she's heading out to the Greek's house. This was a big cat, paw prints are at least 4-5" making this cat about 130lbs or more. We never heard a thing, not a peep from the barn 200 feet away.
So anyone with a infrared sight and a highpowered rifle, I have a job for you to do.

pics!....dwarren you're sick.  Rob, that's a huge cat.  And you'd better set that scope because I'm willing to bet she'll be back.
Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

I have the cat, get your butt out here. He came back last night and we saw him for the first time. He is huge and dark brown in color. He was 35 feet away from the house this time, sneeking up on our rescue dog Squirts in his kennel. Good thing the kennel is 6' chain link with a sheetmetal roof. Once we hit him with our lights, he froze. After about 5 minutes he got up from his pounce crouch and turned and slinked away back down the path and into the woods. Sneaky little fargin bastich.
I had a total money shot on him, elevated up by 25 feet and about 35 feet away. No danger of a stray bullet going anywhere and nothing between me an him. Crap on a stick. Conservation officer showed up within 20 minutes, hit a scent trail and took off into the bush. After crashing around in the bush for an hour with no luck, they called it a night. Too bad, Bev has already cleared a spot on the wall for this Big Bad Putty Tat.
I had never seen one before but now seeing this one and how he moves, it will be much easier to spot. They have green eyes at night when you hit them with light. A 2,000,000 candlepower spotlight should make things much easier to see, same with all the new halogen floods going in this afternoon. You are mine cat, all mine, beyatch. FAK, if only I had a rifle or a 50 pound bow....grrrr.

Hey, since you're such an animal lover, why do want to kill this animal, round my parts, they (really mtn. lions) are endangered, like most wild animals.

Here on Vancouver Island we have numberous distinctions that make this a highly desirable place to live. Part of this distinction is also having the highest population in North America of Cougars. It is also the quickest growing area of the province, meaning it is pushing more and more of the predatory animals into smaller and smaller areas fighting for less and less natural prey.
Once a animal like Mr. Big Bad Kitty has attacked and killed livestock, it is out of our hands as to tranq. and relocate a cat like this. Mr. Kitty has attacked and killed in our immediate area in the last week, we were the lucky ones (so it seems if you can call a mauling lucky). It is a short step for a cougar to jump from sheep to small child which there are numberous ones in the area. As a cougar is a stalker and opportunist, he will sit and wait in ambush in an area like ours where the woods go directly onto the road that two trucks have a hard time passing on. So it is easy pickings for a cougar if he makes the jump.
It seems as though this particular cat is one of two possibilities, a young cat that has just been booted out by mom and does not know any better and know what his natural prey should be (deer are abudant here, waaaaay too abundant, 3 roadkills on the way to work today). The other possibility is that it is a older injured cat, making it far more dangerous again. It would then go after anything it can sink it's teeth into. From the size of the paw prints and the cat not leaving the area after his dogs were released, the conservation officer thinks it is the latter. As much as I like animals and do not condone putting them down for many reasons, in this case it is far better to save livestock and possibly kids as compared to the life of one rogue cougar.

Absolutely, this being the problem for most endangered animals, but one must compromise. I can't say where to draw the line but I feel there should always be that option. And as you metnioned above about the exceedingly high number of deer, probably due to the decrease of the cougar pop. and their hunting grounds. It is such a fine balance that be thrown off very easily.

We have miniature deer here and they are in abundance. It is not uncommon driving through any town on the island to come across them. Even in our city of 60,000 people, they inhabit every section of the city.
