whats does the 30 amp mean in a relay. does it mean is draws 30 amps of current. what would a 40 amp relay do. im just wondering.

All it means is current handling before it will start to fail. A relay only draws 200ma or less.

The 30 amp rating means that it is rated to supply 30 amps to a device. a 40 can supply 40 amps. you must however make sure that the wire you put on the relay will hanndle that kind of load. The coil,the part that triggers the relay only draws about 200 milliamps.(like themagiccone said) Any other questions,feel free to post them. Brian

the reason y i asked that is because i have a relay switch with a wire from terminal 87 to a fused 12v supply. and on 30 it goes to a light. when the coil is activated it goes from the unused 87a to 87. however the fused 12v keeps blwoing fuses everytime it is triggered. ive checked everything. nothing is beign grounded out when its not suppose to. it jsut makes no sense.1

As stated above, the 30 or 40 Amp rating is for the contacts in the relay.

On the other problem, what size fuse is inline? What type of light are you turning on?

have you checked the wiring from the relay terminal # 30 to the light for shorts?

More information needed.

it is an undercarraige neon kit. it worked before when i had someone install it. but when i got a new alarm the installer took it off. but it should work the same way. becase the 12v that activates the coil is from the siren output. and of course the other side of the coil is grounded.

now on the under carriage kit, the neon tranformer has a wire that goes to a switch. and on the other side of the sideis a 12v with a 20 amp fuse. when the switch is switched the 12v goes to the transformer wire thus lighingt the neons.

now with the relay. the siren out put activates the coil. this would connect terminals 30 and 87 together. i have 30 go to the transformer wire before the switch. and i have 87 to to the 12v source with the 20 amp fuse where other side of the switch is. so in a way it bypasses the switch illuminating the lights when the siren has an output. however when make the siren have an output(set the alarm off etc) the 20 amp fuse blows. also the lights illuminate for a split second beofre the fuse blows.

Your transformer may have gone bad. Also if the relays output connected before the switch it may cause problems, it should be connected between the switch and the transformer for the neon lights. If the switch works, what size fuse is powering the switch?

the output is connected between the transformer and switch. the same 20 amp fuse is powering hte switch. i tapped of that to go into the 87 terminal for a 12v supply to go terminal 30 that goes betwennt he switch and trasformer. ill try checking with a multimeter because it shoudl work it jsut doesnt.
