Usually you'll get more responses by making a second post, but, that sounds about right for an Elantra with a DEI system.
Here's how the car works:
--The trunk release button doesn't work when the car's factory alarm is armed.
--If you were to turn the key in the driver's door once to the unlock position, this will disarm the car's factory alarm, allowing the button to work.
Here's how the Viper system works:
--When you press the trunk release, it sends a pulse to the wire connected to the car's trunk release button, which the car ignores when it is armed.
--Also, the Viper's "factory alarm disarm" output sends a pulse to the wire that is connected to the driver's door key cylinder, disarming the alarm.
(P.S. This is all assuming that the installer has connected the Viper's wires to where I think he would.)
If you can't live with this the way it is, the installer could disconnect the Viper's trunk-release wire from where it's connected to the Elentra's trunk release button.
He could instead connect his output to a relay, and have the relay directly trigger the car's trunk motor wire that opens the decklid.
He may charge extra, or he may do it for free to make you happy....your mileage may vary.

Thanks Chris for you reply. At least I know there is a workaround. I could live with it, but it's for my wifes car and I'm trying to make it as simple for her as possible. The factory remote allowed her to just pop the trunk, and she was hoping the new one would be just as easy.

Knowing what you just told me I have a couple theories. Would you mind (or anyone else reading this) letting me know if this makes sense?

When I press the trunk release twice it will open the trunk, without pressing the unlock. I think the alarm is actually disarming factory system when I press the button. When I look in the intallers manual, one of the convenience features is "OEM Alarm Disarm w/trunk release". The default is set to "On". Knowing what you told me, is it possible my first push of the button is disarming the factory alarm but it happens too late for the trunk to pop? Then my second push works because the factory alarm was disabled from the first push?

I see a feature "OEM Alarm Disarm Output" which is set to "With Unlock". I wonder if this was set to "Before Unlock" if it would fix the issue.

I also noticed there is also a feature for "OEM Alarm Disarm Pulses". The default is set to 1, but maybe if I set it to 2 pulses it might delay the unlocking of the trunk a split second longer so that is work?

I have it scheduled in tomorrow with the installer. The dash dimmer lost it's functionality when the system was insalled. I have a feeling he just forgot to plug it back in when he had the cluster out so I'll discusss these options with him.

Thanks!

Chris

are you holding the Aux button down for a minimum of 3-4 seconds?   these units use a "delayed validity" and dont output a signal for 3 seconds...... but yes it should work regardless of whether the alarm is armed or not......

Thank you guys for your help, we got it working!

Chris Luongo, you pointed me in the right direction. The factory disarm was happening at the same time as the trunk release. Since the factory alarm was still armed the trunk wouldn't pop.

At first I tried changing the "OEM Alarm Disarm Output"  to "Before Unlock" but as it turns out, this is only for the door locks, not the trunk.

The solution was to put in a timer to delay the trunk release pulse for a second. Now when I press the trunk release the alarm disarms, and a second later the trunk opens.
