With a 96 Cavalier how would one determine if a security bypass module is needed for a remote starter??

the 96 has passlock 1. You should have a light that comes on when you start the car that says "security" and after a few seconds of starting the car the light will shut off.

Sorry I was typing this while the previous response was posted:

If you have a light on you dash board that reads: "Anti-Theft", that turns on before you start your car and turns off shortly after you the car has been started, then you have a Passlock I anti theft device that you need to bypass.  I would use the single relay with a resistor method to bypass for that car.  It will basically permanently bypass the device though.

Yep I've got to bypass.  Forgive my ignorance for I am a Power Plant Controls Tech midnighting as a remote car starter installer for my betty. Where is the relay installed?  What type of resistor is required?  Sounds easier to disable the factory anti-theft all the time.   I want to avoid buying another module.

{p}You need to pull the shroud off the steering column and look for 3 thin gauge wires: Yellow, Black and White.  You will need a digital multi meter (DMM), a 30amp relay and a resistor.  I would save yourself a trip to the store and buy a 10k ohm Trimpot so you can just dial in the resistence.  Then you need to strip back the Black wire a little, start the car and then cut the yellow wire.  Measure the resistence between the key side of the yellow wire and the black wire that you stripped back.  record the resistence then reverse the DMM leads and record that resistence. You can shut the car off and then look for the bulb test wire which should be black, and it can be found in the same plug as the two Red wires that supply 12v+ to the ignition switch.  dial the higher of the two resistences into the trimpot and then hook up the relay as follows:  Pin 87 goes to the black bulb test wire, pin 30 goes to the black wire that you stripped back earlier (called the passlock ground wire), pin 87a goes to one side of the trimpot and the other side of the trimpot goes to the computer side of the yellow passlock wire, Pin 86 goes to a good chassis ground, and pin 85 goes to the starter wire of the car and the remote starter.  If you need a diagram or any more help let me know.  Good luck.  It is not as difficult as it sounds. {/p}{p}{SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Bell MT'; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Arial'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Arial'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA" target="_blank"}{?xml:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /}{v:shapetype id=_x0000_t75 stroked="f" filled="f" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" o:preferrelative="t" o:spt="75" coordsize="21600,21600" target="_blank"} {/v:shapetype}{/SPAN}{/p}{div style="width:240px;border-bottom:1px solid #eeeeee;margin-top:10px;margin-bottom:0px;"}{/div}{span style="font-size:.70em;line-height:1.2em;color:#000000;"}J Rilla {BR /} {BR /}Owner/Installer{/span}

Doesn't sound to bad.  What's the quickest way to source a 30 amp relay and a 10K pot?  And links or suggestions?

You can get a trimpot and a relay with a wire harness from radio shack. Try and get a trimpot that is tight and will not adjust if accidently bumped. I always put my pots in box that my relays come in to keep them from being bumped.  Radioshack relays dont come in a box, but see what you can do.

Anyone knows where I can find the purple wire that's going from the Theft Deterrent relay to the starter?  I rather use this wire for the "starter" wire of my remote starter installation than the yellow starter wire at the ignition harness.  All descriptions on the web show it located behind the glove box to the right, next to the hatch relay and the A/C valve.  However, my car doesn't have it there. Maybe, because in 1997/1998 they changed the location?  Anyone could help?  Or, is there an easy way to indetify the yellow starter wire around the steering column or where it goes and tap into that one?

Thank you.

(I already installed the Vats/Passkey bypass)

Made up a drawing and got the wiring diagram out of the Hayes Manual.   Everything makes sense except... the need to have the bulb test wire picked up to the black Passlock ground when the remote starter goes hot??

I dont get it either but that's what you have to do because that's how it works.
